Gimme action! saysRahul Bose:

Now, Rahul Bose wants to do the macho act

Tell us about your upcoming movie ‘Chain Kulii Ki Main Kulii’.
It’s primarily a kids’ film. It’s a story of a small boy who finds a magic bat. Every ball that he hits with it goes for a sixer! With that bat, he moves to playing for the team of which play the captain.

How difficult is it to make a kid’s film?
Very difficult! The trick to make a good children’s film is not to look down on them. The moment you do that, you are in for a disaster. Modern urban kids belong to mature demographics. They are more intelligent and understanding than we ever thought.

Why does the movie focus only on urban kids?
There hardly exists a market for cinema in rural India. Movies that are produced don’t end up going beyond small towns where financial results are yet to be viable.

Any specific reason for being involved with this film?
I make a conscious choice to work in movies of every genre. For example ‘Pyaar Ke Side Effects’ was a romantic comedy. Similarly, ‘Chain Kulli Ki…’ is a film for kids.

What other genres are you keen to explore?
I would really love to do an action film. I feel this is one genre that I still need to explore and exploit.

What do you feel about the hype surrounding movies going to the Cannes festival?
Going to film festivals like Cannes requires an amazing product and loads of money. It doesn’t help if you set up a stall at Cannes, sit there having samosas and come back. Ninety-five percent of the movies that have been to Cannes have come back without making a substantial mark.

But isn’t it a good networking ground for actors?
I don’t network even in India, forget doing that internationally. I feel acting is one profession where you don’t need to network at all. If you can’t act, that’s the end. Nothing else can help you.

What about the Rugby tournaments coming up?
As of now, I am undergoing training for five hours a day as I have two international rugby tournaments coming up—one in Mumbai where we play against Guam and the second one in Manila where we play against Philippines. We hope to score well on that front.
